Sailing Day Camp

Sail Canada CANSail 1 to CANSail 4, Kids aged 9-to-16

ONEC operates a sailing camp for youth between the ages of 9 and 16. The students receive quality instruction stressing safety, fun, and learning. They are introduced to many different elements of sailing, safety practices, and seamanship. They will develop new skills in boat handling and sailing for both fun and competition.

Sailing Camp

Sail Canada certified instructors teach trainees, and successful trainees receive Sail Canada certificates from CANSail 1 to CANSail 4. We emphasize safety and low student-to-instructor ratios in accordance with Sail Canada guidelines. With our flexible week-to-week program, your child can move up through the levels as the summer progresses.

The camp operates in 1–4 week modules from July to August. There are a limited number of spaces.

Youths’ skills and experience are evaluated on the first day of camp, and an appropriate boat is chosen for them. Beginning sailors will be taught on the two-person Pico or the three-to- four person CL16. More experienced trainees will sail on RS Fevas, Lasers or Laser 2s.

Sailing Camp Philosophy

At ONEC we want to ensure that the kids are receiving quality instruction stressing safety, fun and learning. We want them to learn and incorporate good safety practices and seamanship when taking part in any boating activity as well as developing new skills in boat handling and sailing. We also want to instil a responsibility for the boats and equipment. Finally we want to promote the development sportsmanship, integrity, and interpersonal skills.

Sailing is truly a unique sport. Skills learned can be used and enjoyed for a lifetime. Sailing challenges both the mind and body. It can be competitive or recreational; you can sail on big boats or little boats; by oneself, with a friend or on a team. Most importantly, everyone has the capacity to learn to sail on some level no matter what individual challenges he or she faces.

CANSail Levels

CANSail Level 1 (suggested 1 week full-day camp to complete):

This level introduces the beginner to sailing. It covers safety, seamanship, rigging and basic boat handling under an instructor’s direction in wind speeds of 4–9 knots. Terminology is also introduced to the beginner at this level together with seamanship and boat handling skills under instructor direction in wind speeds of 4–9 knots. This is the equivalent to white sail 1&2.

CANSail Level 2 (suggested 2-3 weeks full-day camp to complete):

A comprehensive level that covers the minimum knowledge and skills a sailor requires to sail safely and competently without supervision in wind speeds of 4–9 knots. This is the equivalent to white sail 3.

CANSail Level 3 (suggested 4-6 weeks full-day camp to complete):

This level introduces the sailor to sail trim and basic boat tuning. It also covers safety, seamanship, terminology, sail theory, sail shape and advanced boat handling skills in wind speeds of 9–4 knots. This is the equivalent to bronze sail 4.

CANSail Level 4 (suggested 4-6 weeks full-day camp to complete):

Spinnaker use, boat maintenance, trapeze, and sail theory are covered in this level together with advanced boat handling skills in wind speeds of 9–4 knots. This is the equivalent to bronze sail 5.
